In any artistic endeavor there lives the possibility of encountering unexpected intersections with worlds less familiar that touch its focus. These worlds, accessible to us only through our art, in turn become new sources of inspiration that nourish our work.

Yellow Barn is honored to collaborate in this way with individuals and institutions from other disciplines, sharing a curiosity and approach to learning that aspires to foster and celebrate new models for bringing artists and audiences together.

Our partnership with the Greenwood School is a fundamental one and one that has given us the freedom to explore these ongoing collaborations:

The Nasher Sculpture Center, located on a 2.4-acre site in the heart of Dallas, Texas, is dedicated to the display and study of modern and contemporary sculpture. In November 2009, Nasher’s director Jeremy Strick approached Seth Knopp to direct a new concert series, and together they launched Soundings: New Music at the Nasher in November 2010. Soundings, and its relationship with Yellow Barn through the Artist Residencies program, has been embraced by the Dallas musical community, drawing full houses and press coverage that has been thorough and enthusiastic. The Next Stage Arts Project is a consortium of local artists and arts organizations committed to transforming a former church in downtown Putney into a 160-seat performing arts center. In the summer of 2010 this group invited Yellow Barn to participate in discussions focused on creating a space suitable for chamber music and to bring its Artist Residency concerts to Next Stage in the months when its summer venue, the Big Barn, is closed. The importance of Next Stage to the Putney community as well as its naturally resonant acoustics brought this transformation quickly to pass and soon Yellow Barn’s Artist Residency concerts appeared at Next Stage, bringing a wide variety of repertoire to Putney audiences and helping to raise awareness for the Next Stage Arts Project as it embarks on its multi-year renovation. The Putney Public Library has generously hosted Yellow Barn's Saturday night pre-concert discussions since 2008. In conjunction with Yellow Barn Artist Residencies, lectures, discussions and performances led by an array of guests that include artists, scholars and scientists are presented in the library throughout the year. In some cases Putney Public Library staff members work with Yellow Barn to create reading lists and displays books related to particular residency topics. In addition, Yellow Barn has enjoyed project-based collabroations with other local, national, and international organziations:

National September 11 Memorial & Museum honors the victims of the events of 9/11, those who risked their lives to save others, the thousands who survived, and all who demonstrated extraordinary compassion in the aftermath. Demonstrating the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and its impact on communities at the local, national, and international levels, the 9/11 Memorial attests to the triumph of human dignity over human depravity and affirm an unwavering commitment to the fundamental value of human life. In 2013 staff members of the 9/11 Memorial met with Artistic Director Seth Knopp about a possible Yellow Barn - 9/11 Memorial partnership, and initiated conversations between Yellow Barn and Tuesday's Children to create a pilot program that brings children from 9/11 families together with Yellow Barn's Young Artists Program composers and musicians (ages 13-20) in creating a composition that memorializes the events of 9/11. Visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum website.

Putney Central School is Putney's public school for children in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Yellow Barn first collaborated with PCS in the spring of 2010 as part of Yellow Barn's Local Schools Residency. Since then PCS students have attended special performances of Artist Residency projects and in 2013 worked with Yellow Barn alumni ensemble Due East, poet Wally Swist, and composer Elainie Lillios on a year-round project (Our Local Schools: Music of Time and Place) based on sounds collected from the PCS trail system and original haikus inspired by the student's experiences of fall, winter, and spring. Visit the Putney Central School website.

Sandglass Theater is an internationally known theater company in Putney specializing in combining puppets with music, actors, and visual imagery. In 2009 Yellow Barn and Sandglass Theater collaborated on a production of Sofia Gubaidulina's Dancer on a Tightrope with puppetry by Co-Artistic Directors Eric and Inez Bass. The ensemble reprised Dancer on a Tightrope as part of a joint performance in April 2010 and subsequently videotaped the production. Visit the Sandglass Theater website.
