Michele Burgess (San Diego, CA) works in printmaking, painting, sculpture, and book art. She is co-director of Brighton Press, a nationally known fine press, where she creates her artist'­s books and collaborates with other artists and poets on projects that involve the book as an art medium. Last year, her artist'­s book, Sleeping Inside the Glacier, her third collaboration with poet Sandra Alcosser, was included in the "Book as Art" exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. A retrospective of her work in book art was held in 2004 at the Museum of American Art in Giverny, France, and traveled to the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego. Her collaborative work with poets and artists was featured in an exhibition of Brighton Press'­ work in book form and other media in 2004 at the Oceanside Museum of Art, in Oceanside, California. Michele'­s artist'­s books are in public collections across the country, including the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts in San Francisco, Fresno Art Museum, Houghton Library at Harvard University, Lilly Library at Indiana University, Stanford University Library, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Muse' d'Art Americain in Giverny, France, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Newberry Library in Chicago, the New York Public Library, and the Toledo Art Museum. Michele has been exhibiting actively for 24 years and has served as guest lecturer, curator, and artist-in-residence at numerous museums, universities, and arts organizations. She received her MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1985.
